You can’t control what you don’t know. Hazard assessments are key to making sure your workplace is safe and your employees are protected against workplace injuries or occupational illness.
Anticipating, recognizing, evaluating, and controlling workplace hazards is a critical part of the work CHESS can do for you. The hazard assessment can be as extensive as a complete safety, health and environmental audit, to determine compliance with OSHA and EPA regulations, or as small as helping you abate an OSHA citation or solve an employee complaint.
Hazard assessments and controls done by CHESS safety and health experts can cover:
Hazard assessments and controls done by CHESS safety and health experts can cover:
Confined spaces
Identifying confined spaces. Determining which confined spaces are permit-required confined spaces. Developing confined space permits and entry procedures.
Employee exposure assessments
Industrial hygiene monitoring for chemical hazards or noise. Evaluation of air quality in workplaces.
Personal protective equipment
Written hazard assessments, evaluating what personal protective equipment is required for different tasks.
Job hazard analysis/job safety analysis
JHAs or JSAs, providing step by step evaluations of the potential hazards, preventive and control measures, and personal protective equipment for specific tasks. CHESS can conduct the job hazard analysis or train your safety committee members or supervisors to perform them.
Respiratory protection
Specific recommendations for respirator selection. Evaluation of chemical contaminants in the workplace, to determine the need for respiratory protection and the assigned protection factor required. Respirator cartridge change-out schedules. Written respiratory protection programs, as required by OSHA’s respiratory protection standard. Assistance with setting up medical evaluations for respirator users. Respirator training with qualitative or quantitative respirator fit testing.
Lockout (LOTO)
Lockout/tagout procedures and lockout/tagout programs to control hazardous energy sources, required when servicing equipment. CHESS safety professionals have developed lockout/tagout procedures for equipment ranging from automated production line machines to heating and cooling (HVAC) equipment to vehicles.
Machine guarding evaluations
Evaluation of machine hazards for adequacy of machine guarding at point of operation, power transmission apparatus, other moving parts, and other hazards such as heat or high voltage. Advise on appropriate selection of machine guards.
Noise
Sound level monitoring, noise dosimetry, and noise exposure evaluations, to determine need for noise controls and appropriate hearing protection. Written hearing conservation programs, as required by OSHA’s occupational noise exposure standard. Evaluation of need for routine audiometric examinations.
Ergonomics
Ergonomic evaluations of work stations. Design of work stations (manufacturing, assembly, office) and work activities (lifting, positioning, how processes are completed) to improve employee comfort and productivity and to reduce the risk of musculoskeletal disorders.
