A small woodworking facility had two serious hand injuries, including one resulting in the loss of two fingers, within two months. They had no safety program and didn’t provide any specific safety training to their employees. They called CHESS for help. The first time we walked through their shop with them, we identified numerous safety hazards.
They really took our comments to heart, so that when we came back for the compliance audit, an in-depth look at their operations, programs, training, and hazards, they had already corrected many concerns. We developed simple equipment safety guidelines they could post and use to train new employees, developed an emergency plan and a safety and health handbook for their employees, provided safety and health training to them, gave them a building inspection form customized for their facility… In the five years we worked with them, until they were purchased by another company, they had only one injury, a slip that had no lost time, and one OSHA inspection, which we were onsite to help with and which resulted in zero citations.
